The Oxford Companion to Beer

Edited by Garrett Oliver

The Oxford Companion to Beer is an encyclopedia dedicated to the topic of beer and its many facets. At over 900 pages, it contains a wealth of knowledge on every topic relating to beer. The entries are penned by 166 of the world's leading experts on beer. It is edited by Garrett Oliver, the brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery and one of the most highly regarded scholars of beer.

While an attempt at listing every type of article included in this massive book would inevitably fall short, included topics range from brewing ingredient and processes, significant breweries, beer culture and history of various countries, individuals important to beer, pairings, beer styles, law, off-flavors, packaging, and this list goes on and on.

While there is certainly beer-related information that isn't contained within this book (for example, while there are articles on many off-flavors or beer defects, you can find some rarely occurring off flavors which aren't covered in the book), the information contained within should satisfy the needs of almost everyone who is looking to learn more about the topic of beer.

There are black and white pictures throughout the book, and there are 16 pages of color plates towards the middle of the book.

In addition to the articles, there are also appendices which list beer related organizations, festivals, websites and magazines and museums. Each contributor has a listing noting their qualifications, and a 30 page index finishes it off.

While there are better books to introduce the broad topic of beer to someone that is casually into learning about it, anyone seeking to have a broad wealth of knowledge at this fingertips will find the Oxford Companion to Beer well worth the price.
